Carneros Garnet Pinot Noir

LOVE THE WINE, AND PRICE

by Michele Anna Jordan

vintage: 2007

Our Valentine’s Day pick is the Saintsbury Garnet, 2007 Carneros with the budget-wise price of $20. Who says romance can’t be practical? The crisp pinot noir with bright red fruit, herbs and spice is food friendly, one your valentine will appreciate over dinner.

“The Garnet is an easy drinking, user-friendly pinot noir with integrity and a sense of place but no sense of entitlement,” said co-founder Richard Ward, referring to its twist-off screw cap.

With most quality pinots in the $30-plus range, how does the Garnet manage to hold the line at $20? “Saintsbury makes 45,000 cases of pinot noir a year,” Ward said, “so we have access to many great vineyard sources and possess certain economies of scale that allow us to put great wine in the bottle for a fair price at each of our quality levels.”
