2014 Calera Clone Sundawg Ridge Pinot Noir
At Saintsbury, we taste through all of our small lot wines each year before we release them. If we taste one that especially stands out as an exceptional wine and a shining example of the new vintage, we give it a special designation. As an homage to our namesake George Saintsbury's famous book, we label it a CELLARBOOK wine. We do not take this declaration lightly and make sure that these are only our best of the best wines for you to enjoy now or after extended cellaring.
In 1994, Nancy Winn and Chuck Kensler retired from their lives in Palo Alto and were ready to start the next chapter, which would take place on their 10 acre apple orchard in Green Valley of the Russian River Valley. A trifecta of events – meeting and taking a class from vineyard manager Jim Pratt, the fall out of the apple market and embracing their innate love for hard work – launched Nancy and Chuck as premium grape growers. Planted exclusively to Pinot Noir in 2000 and sustainably farmed, Sundawg Ridge Vineyard has become an exceptional site that produces fruit with incredible depth and sous bois qualities.

Following heavy rains in February, budbreak began in Green Valley in the last week of that month. With fully saturated soils and warmer than usual temperatures, the vines brought the 2014 fruit to maturity with great concentration and big round tannins.
