2019 Lee Vynd Pinot Noir, RAW Memorial Scholarship
This is a new and unique offering from our cellar at Saintsbury. In honor of late Saintsbury Co-Founder Richard A. Ward, we have crafted a highly limited Pinot Noir from our neighbors at Lee Vineyard. Dick's passion for wine lives on through the UC Davis scholarship that bears his name, and proceeds from this bottling will help those seeking to begin their own journey into winemaking.
Lee Vineyard, originally planted in the 1970s, is a Carneros icon and has been a close partner since 1983. We can think of no better site to express the history of Dick's vision for Saintsbury. Made with 60% Pommard Clone and 40% Swan and aged for 18 months in 40% New French Oak barrels, winemaker Tim Colla sought to create a well-structured blend that would benefit from aging: "One of the things I learned from Dick early on is the beauty and complexity that come from well-aged Pinot Noir. He always encouraged me to acquire several bottles of a single wine and track its evolution over the years. This is my attempt to create a wine worthy of that discovery."
Great bottles of wine are like old friends, they remind us of shared experiences and special moments in time. Cheers to you, Dick, we remain forever grateful.
